Why didn’t I listen?
Why wasn’t I happy with the honeysuckle mosaics upon the wet grass?
Why didn’t I keep the gold road? Why did I walk the path of bones?
The eternity milk shaded, cosmic, and immortal? Why not for me?
What from within the trees called?
The pangs from thorns and glass shards were not enough, neither the whispers
Of the Spanish moss above, neither the dying Sun behind the oaks.
Not the cauldron that flew from the forest deep?
No ears to grant me? None to hear their wind turning the pages to a scene
Unseen? Why did you have to plant an eternal field of violets?
You chased me into the flowers. What desire?
I looked at the sky and saw the crows’ quills scratch the coffin lid canvas.
The gravestones atop the hills watched as if grinning.
Not the absence of light, only the pouring of shadows.
The violets rose like smoke the farther in I ran. Only they had the ladder.
Not us, Lord. Not us. You do as you please. Only crumbs and ash
Bless our rotten earth. Now is the sunblack era.
